Lurana Mary Francis White, SA, co-foundress of the Society of the Atonement, instilled in her Sisters a love for the poor and oppressed in imitation of Christ and in the spirit of Francis of Assisi. A contemplative woman of faith, she dedicated her life to the mission of unity. Her life was strengthened by a spirituality of Atonement or the cross understood in the contemporary sense of the Gospel as liberating and non-violent. This is the crux of what it means to be called a "repairer of the breach and restorer of paths to dwell in" (Isaiah 58:12)
Father Paul Wattson, SA co-founder of the Society of the Atonement, was a true apostle of Christian Unity and charity, an ardent Franciscan, missionary of At-One Ment and leader. His life purpose and legacy was work for the realization of Christ's prayer at the Last Supper: "That all may be one: as thou, Father art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us." (John 17:21)
The Franciscan Sisters of the Atonement have been ministering in Alberta since 1926. (Smoky Lake, Edmonton, and Camrose) As of 2017, the Sisters currently minister in Edmonton Alberta.
